Summary
ERISA requires virtually every employee benefit plan to have a summary plan description (SPD) and to furnish copies to each individual entitled to receive the SPD. The SPD is the primary vehicle for informing participants and beneficiaries about their rights and benefits under their employee benefit plans. U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) regulations also require SPDs to contain other information that is not necessarily part of the plan (e.g., identifying information about the plan sponsor, plan administrator and numerous other items).

On September 10, 2014, Governor Jerry Brown signed the Healthy Workplaces, Healthy Families Act of 2014. The Act requires California employers to provide employees with one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked starting on July 1, 2015.
